Turns out it's a Cactus-200 format which isn't even compatible with the original red book cd standard. This is a bit shit. Found this out at http://ukcdr.org/issues/cd/bad/ And the bloody Kings of Leon is the same (was going to get that soon) as is the Thrills album (which I have heard on mp3). So now maybe I should just burn a copy of The Thrills instead of buying one (look the copy protection made be become a pirate). I had heard all this stuff before but I didn't think it would be affecting me that soon. I thought it was only for Celine Dion albums (oh look at what your apathy leads to).

The Thrills have blurb on the back claiming that lending a CD to a friend has the same effect as stealing one from a shop. I'm liking them less and less all the time. Caroline hasn't tried putting them on her iBook yet. Damned if I'm going to. She brought home a Shakira CD once that she couldn't listen to. Einstürzende Neubaten put "this CD will not play on a PC" on the cover of Strategies against Architecture III as a 'joke'. Wierdos. It stopped me buying it until I heard back from Mute that it wasn't copy protected.

Maybe The Thrills record company put that there (hoping that they are nice chaps after all)? I reckon the record comopanies will be successful and people will (over a period of time) ensure that their cd players are Cactus-200/Numbus-2000/Thrills/Shakira compatible.
For the moment someone has ripped The Darkness cd and made me a copy on their superior DVD/CD-RW. So is Atlantic happy? The cd is now copied because I couldn't play it in the pc.
There was a good summary of copyright (from a US legal position unfortunately) in the Register http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/32004.html one thing is that making a copy of a cd may infringe on copyright but that it is not theft. So record companies have to stop talking about stealing and so on (not that they will of course). Asked Road Records about it and they said that all the copies of the album are copy (read 'play') protected.
Anyway not having a new album to play on Tuesday meant I could justify getting another one yesterday - Ulrich Schnauss - 'far away trains passing by', it's quite nice, sort of IDM/Trance Europe Express early mid 90s stuff. He's playing in The Sugar Club Fri week for a tenner.
